Professional Makeup Brushes

Quality makeup brushes are the cornerstone of any artist's toolkit. A good set should include a variety of brushes for different applications – foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, blush, and eyeliner. Synthetic brushes are great for liquid and cream products, while natural hair brushes are ideal for powders. High-quality brushes not only ensure smooth and precise application but also last longer with proper care.

Sponge

A sponge is a versatile tool that has become a staple for makeup artists, and I think it's amazing! They allow for seamless blending of foundation, concealer, and other cream products. The sponge can be used damp for a dewy finish or dry for more coverage, making it perfect for achieving a flawless complexion. Please keep in mind that if your artist is using sponges, including branded ones (i.e. beauty blender), they should be fresh and unused!

High-Quality Makeup Palette

A well-curated makeup palette is invaluable for any artist - trust me! Personally, I tend to opt for palettes that offer a range of colours and finishes, including matte, shimmer, and metallic. This versatility allows you to create a variety of looks, from natural to dramatic. Many professional brands offer customizable palettes, enabling you to refill or replace shades as needed. Hot tip: if you are buying makeup for your self, always match to your skin tone -unsure of your skin tone? Book a lesson!

Lighting

Lighting is crucial for applying makeup accurately - especially if a camera is involved! I love a good lighted makeup mirror because it provides consistent, natural light that mimics daylight, ensuring colours are true and applications are even. Bonus - it makes everyone look FABULOUS! Many mirrors come with adjustable brightness and magnification, making them perfect for detailed work and ensuring every look is picture-perfect (literally!) Also, aim for neutral and not overly warm or cool lights. For makeup application, 4800K-5000K is recommended as it is not too warm or too cool.

Setting Spray

A setting spray is the final touch that locks in makeup, ensuring longevity and preventing smudging or fading throughout the day. As a wedding makeup artist, this is especially crucial for me and my wedding clients. Choose a setting spray that suits your client's skin type, whether they need a mattifying formula for oily skin or a hydrating mist for dry skin. This tool is essential for keeping makeup looking fresh for hours, especially for special events, like weddings, or long photo shoots.

These are my absolute top 5 essential makeup tools! Trust me when I say that incorporating these tools into your makeup kit will not only enhance your artistry but also improve the overall experience for your clients. If you are buying for yourself, it's a great start to establishing a tool kit to make you look and feel fabulous. I always recommend investing in quality products because it will pay off in the long run, because you'll achieve better results and build a reputation for being "that girl".
